Area rugs can be used in lots of standard ways. You can use them to define spaces. You can use them in your entry way, down a hall or in the dining room. Area rugs can be used to provide a little comfort when you step out of bed in the morning. They’re nice in a reading room or office. They can provide a little more comfort and safety in a kid’s room. Simply put, area rugs have multiple uses. In fact, some of them may even be a little bit out of the box. In this blog, we’re going to go beyond the standard uses and introduce you to some creative ways you can decorate with them. Let’s get started.
Hang it up
Every room should have a focal point. An area rug on the floor can serve as this, but it can also work well on the wall. So, instead of hanging a large piece of painted artwork, mirror or picture, why not consider a rug? Many rugs are works of art themselves and it seems only right that you’d want to show them off. This is the perfect way to do so.
Place it on a chair, settee, loveseat or couch
A flat weave area rug can look great when used on a chair, settee, loveseat or couch. With a couch or loveseat, consider draping it over the back. Tuck it behind the back cushions and let it hang over the back of the couch. With a settee, you could drape it over the front like you would a throw blanket, spacing it evenly on both sides and letting it hang a little below the settee. People would then use the area rug to sit on and rest their backs against. You could also consider using a beautiful faux fur or sheepskin fur rug to drape over the front of a chair.
Layer multiple area rugs
While this involves using area rugs on the floor, per typical use, it adds an extra element of creativity. Instead of just using one area rug in your space, consider using multiple ones. Find a few that you like, that will complement one another, then layer them on the floor. You can also layer area rugs over carpet. Using an area rug on your carpet can help protect it. It can also help you define a space and add a little more flair to a room.
Use on your bed or daybed
A flat weave rug is a good choice for a bed or daybed. You can drape it over the top of the comforter, then fold it down when you get into bed. It’s a great way to add more beauty to the space. This type of rug can also be nice on a daybed. Choose something slightly smaller (length-wise) than the bed and tuck it in on both sides.
Take it outside
Do you have a beautiful sunroom? This is a great place to put your area rug. You can also choose to truly take your area rug outside to the porch or deck, but make sure to choose one that is made for the outdoors. Consider placing it in the center of the room, under a porch swing or to define a space such as a dining area or a spot for chatting. If using your area rug under a table and chairs, make sure that it’s large enough that when the chairs are pulled out they remain on the rug so that they stay level.
Replace your bath mat
If you want to add a little more visual interest to your bathroom, consider using an area rug in there instead of a bath mat. Area rugs come in various patterns and styles. They’re a great way to add color to a space. Just make sure you choose one that is better able to handle rooms with high moisture levels.
Use in place of a kitchen mat
Some people choose kitchen mats to put along their counter tops and sink area. You could use smaller area rugs or a long runner instead.
There really are multiple uses for area rugs. You can create conversation spaces, frame a dining area and add warmth and comfort to your bedroom floor. But beyond all of the typical uses, there are even more ways to utilize an area rug. Since they come in various styles, colors and patterns, you have so many options available to you. Don’t be afraid to think outside of the box.
